Norway’s Stavanger Brass Band, including former Field Band Foundation tutor Ndabo Zulu (24) from Durban, has won the Norwegian national brass band championships. Zulu is currently studying jazz at the University of Stavanger, teaching school bands in that town, and performing with a variety of jazz bands in the area. He has received a bursary from the well-known South African conductor and music educator, Richard Cock.

Also at these championships, former De Beers Kimberley PPC Field Band tutor and trumpeter Dingaan Chabalala (23) represented Tromsø Brass, coming a highly creditable fourth place in the second division. Dingaan was also recently accepted into the Norwegian National Youth Orchestra which brings together Norway’s most talented music students for a prestigious orchestra course and tour. Awarded a scholarship by the Norwegian government, Chabalala is in his second year of classical trumpet studies at the University in Tromsø.

Both Dingaan and Ndabo are beneficiaries of the Foundation’s one-year exchange programme undertaken with the Norwegian Band Federation and FK Norway.
