In the Third Quarter of every year, the Foundation’s national championships for 10 qualifying field bands are held over two days in Johannesburg, and are open to the public at no charge.

Bands attending this apex competition are selected for their achievements at the above-mentioned regional festivals. These bands compete in the different individual and group specialisations used in Field Band performances before judges drawn from South African and abroad.

The event also provides an opportunity for Foundation sponsors and other public and private sector supporters to come together at a VIP breakfast event hosted by the Department of Arts & Culture and De Beers Consolidated Mines.

In 2014, top honours at the national championships were taken by the PFG Londulusha Field Band (Springs), followed closely by De Beers PPC Kimberley, and the Black Like Me, Real People Mdantsane Field Band (East London).
