Annual regional championships of the Field Band Foundation were held in Thabazimbi’s Regorogile township on Saturday, 11 July 2015. Field Bands from Thabazimbi, Blouberg, Musina, Rustenburg, Cullinan, and Hammanskraal showcased the results of their consistent endeavour in creativity, performance design, field movement, and musicality (see pics of the Black Like Me Hammanskraal Field Band and of the Rustenburg’s Royal Bafokeng Field Band alongside).
The event was one of two regional championship events taking place this weekend. The other took place, also on Saturday, in the Northern Cape’s Kuruman, with Field Bands from Kimberley, Postmasburg, Daniëlskuil, and Kuruman putting on original and excellent displays. Both events received substantial sponsorship from the Department of Arts & Culture (DAC), and attracted local and national print and radio media attention.
The Limpopo gathering of 850 Foundation members was addressed by FBF regional operations manager Moira Thomas, Tshegofatso Kgotlhang of Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore, and Mpho Mabule of the Department of Arts and Culture.
Field Band Foundation CEO Nicky du Plessis opened the gathering in Kuruman (see this CEO’s speech, “It’s our nation to build”, in the “News” section of the website at www.fieldband.org.za), and this event also enjoyed a participation-drumming performance given by allied DAC youth partners.
Next week sees the other two FBF regional championships – in the Eastern Cape’s Dordrecht and in Johannesburg, both on Saturday morning, 18 July.
At these regional events, Field Bands compete for places at the apex FBF National Championships that will take place at the Wanderers Stadium (Johannesburg) on 2 and 3 October.
The FBF’s National Championships are also made possible through the farsighted and generous support of the Department of Arts & Culture, the FBF’s national partner in working to social cohesion and nation building.
