The Field Band Foundation was started in 1997 to promote, establish and develop educational and recreation community-based field bands in disadvantaged areas of the Republic of South Africa. In doing so, it creates opportunities for the development of positive lifeskills among young people, primarily using the mediums of music and dance.

The Foundation is a non-profit company in terms of the Companies Act No 71 of 2008 (registration number 1997/002/009/08); is registered with the Department of Social Development as a non-profit organisation (registration number 039-910-NPO); and is registered with the South African Revenue Service as a public benefit organisation without members (PBO tax exemption number 18/11/13/1370).
